Residents of Treasure Island and Bayview Hunters Point need YOUR support.
From 1942 to 1997, Treasure Island, an island between San Francisco and Oakland, was a former nuclear training site. A 2006 Navy report revealed that Site 12, Treasure Island’s residential district, is “radiologically impacted” and is the site in which radioactive material was stored and dumped.Just a few miles south in Bayview Hunters Point, a contaminated shipyard sits on the San Francisco Bay.
In 1946, this shipyard stored and cleaned radioactive ships returning from offshore nuclear tests. Tetra Tech was hired by the Navy to test the soil for radioactive contamination. Former Tetra Tech employees have come forward and admitted to falsifying the results.
Now, a multibillion-dollar development is in the works to create over 2,000 residential units, 500 hotel rooms, retail, recreation, and office space on these contaminated sites in the next 15 years. This involves the excavation of potentially radioactive soil that has not been sufficiently tested for safety.
